Is Generative AI Making Society Dumber? Are Chat Bots Isolating Us From Each Other as a Society? How Healthy or Safe is it for Us and Our Planet?

I don’t think people realize how detrimental to the environment generative AI is, and how unethical Chat GPT has become. Well, unless you’re an artist and/or a writer. The fact that generative AI has worked itself into society and is seen as normal and encouraged is so wrong and disgusting. Chat GPT is making people stupid and unable to write or research for themselves. As much as I could talk and rant about how much I hate these two forms of AI, I wanted to bring up how horrible it is for the environment.

From an article on Business Today, “Water is used to cool down powerful supercomputers as they train AI systems to mimic human writing. Heavy electricity usage goes into analysing and computing the human-written text given to these large language models like ChatGPT. On hot days, data centres need to pump in water to a cooling tower outside the warehouse-sized buildings…OpenAI’s Chat GPT consumes 500 ml of water for every 5 to 50 prompts it answers, from 2021 to 2022 nearly 1.7 billion gallons was used,”. That was just a few years ago, and with how much the use and “trend” of generative AI and the use of Chat GPT has boomed, I can’t imagine it’s gotten better.

More and more people and businesses are using AI, causing it to become almost normalized. This takes away from actual artists and writers who take months and years to practice and perfect their craft. Who give all their blood, sweat and tears to their hobbies and passions…and now a bunch of rich billionaires and out of touch business guys are replacing these individuals with technology that is destroying our planet and collective IQ.
